Happy new year !
Hello there. Today, I am going to be talking about my resolutions for 2025. I know some of you might think that new year’s resolutions are kind of stupid and it’s been a few years since they have made any.
It seems stupid to wait for a certain date just to tell others things we might only do for the first following days and give it up. Of course, we will repeat the exact same stuff 1 year later.
I 100% agree with this. I believe a good resolution could -and should- very well start whenever we feel like it -or need it. For example, November 17th or even July 6th sound great (only to quote few random dates out of 363 others…). If anyone wants to stop smoking in October, why wait 2 months ?
Anyways, it doesn’t matter because we can do whatever the fuck we want. I think, the same way Christmas is a good time to remember and get in touch with family and other loved ones, new year is a reminder that you gotta zoom out from your little box and questions some things in your life.
To be fair, I believe t wouldn’t hurt any of us if we were to practice some critic or self reflexion on our well established routine, relations with others and purpose in life more often.
A training without a plan, a project without defined steps or a drive without an itinerary won’t lead you nowhere. This is why I think it is beneficial for all of us to set some new milestones as we reflect and ponder about our current life once in a while. Here are my 10 resolutions for 2025:
1. Read more.
At least 7pages/week – 1 book a month
I have spent a good chunk of my teenage years thinking reading was something you had to be into otherwise you could not like it. Then I just realised that you have to read something you are curious about or interested in to enjoy it. Now, to me, reading is like eating chocolate. The more I do it, the more I want to do it -I can also spend a whole month without eating chocolate. The only difference is it makes me feel great. I feel like reading gives you access to so many things or reflexions you probably wouldn’t have come to think about during your lifetime -or very much later in life. It is a shortcut to so many ideas in life. People have written down thoughts about their life experiences and you get to read them before even getting there or without going through it. Awesome.
2. Take care of my health.
Avoid ultra processed food – limit toxins from entering by body (smoking, drinking…)
I don’t know about, but I intend to walk around and make my way through life with the same body I have now. Now of course I do enjoy going off road once in a while. And it is precisely because I do that I ought to follow some guidelines. Would I enjoy snow if I were to live in North pole ? Would I enjoy as much as I do seeing a good friend after a while if we saw each other 24/7? I don’t think so.
3. Trust the process.
Processes is what protects us from our emotions.
A process I believe allows us to get indicators. I could not find who exactly said this but “what gets measured get managed”. I truly believe this. How can be get better in any area of our life if we do not have a reference point ? Now of course this all need to be nuanced because we are humans. We do need from time to time to break the rules or let the dogs out – in any kind of way. But in order to move forward, learn and improve, I strongly believe we gotta follow a process
4. Baby steps.
Stop overthinking – Just Do It.
This is an extension to the previous point. Whether it is improving a relationship, studying for an exam or starting a business, I think we can all agree that it all starts somewhere. It doesn’t matter how big or hard is the task or the goal we want to achieve, motion is going to be required. One question I have started to ask myself is “What did I get done this week? “. Did I just write do to lists, talk to people about what I want to do, read about people doing it , talked about it in my blog ? or did I actually do something -as insignificant as it can be- that gets me closer to this thing I want to do ? Remember; Nothing, but doing the thing is going to get the thing done.
5. Go on a mini adventure every month.
Something that I would not typically do.
Talking about baby steps. Whether it is talking to a stranger, going for a walk or going somewhere I never been; Let’s do it! Let’s assume that I live till I’m 50 years old. If I go on a tiny adventure every month between now and my death, this will be 337 mini adventures that I would not have lived otherwise. Sounds like a great deal to me. I think that zooming out sets everything back in perspective. One step at a time, anything is doable.
6. I’m not special.
I suck at some things.
To begin with, it took me some time to understand (and still bugs me from time to time), but trying to be great everywhere isn’t always good. More often than not, I end up being good at a lot of stuff, but never great at a single thing. I believe this is part of walking its own path and building one’s identity. Why always try to improve skills I suck at and not mastering the stuff I am good at ? The very stuff that builds my identity and makes me who I am. This doesn’t mean that I can’t be curious and explore new stuff. But I have to acknowledge that other people are more skilled than I am at some things. Secondly, I am a white lucky boy living in a western country, I have never experience war, famine or even parent divorce. I can’t complain about shit. I sometimes think about this idiom; If every person in the world was to throw their problems in a big pile, I’d be so scared, I’d take mine and run away. I have nothing special that justify making up excuses for anything. This is called being a coward.
7. Win the mornings.
A game changer.
I feel great when I get up early. As simple as that. There is something special about realizing that it is not even noon and you’ve already got so much shit done. And guess what, this nice feeling makes you wanna get even more stuff done before the end of the day. I truly don’t think there is such a thing like being a morning or a night person. Andrew HUBERMAN explains it very well. Wake up at the desired time an implement those 4 things in your morning routine. Within 3 days you’ll be a morning person : 1/Get some Caffeine – 2/Have social interactions -3/Get some sunlight in you eyes – 4/Engage in a physical activity
8. Spend more time with my family.
Things change.
I have recently started reading about the Stoic Philosophy. Although I do not agree about all their principles and guidelines, I find the following very true: Everything changes. Death is just around the corner and can show up anytime and take anyone. Could be in 50 years as it could very well be tomorrow. People get babies, climate evolves, flowers die ; it all changes. Let’s enjoy the moments we got and stop living, putting things off and acting as if we’ll still be here 150 years from now
9. Run long distances.
Run a Marathon in less than 3 hours.
Running sucks. I hate it and it is precisely the reason why I like it so much. Rarely -if ever- I have felt so accomplished than after completing a 1hour + run. It feels like when undergoing an effort, the brain sweeps out or shuts down everything that is unnecessary. During the last few km of a long run, all the questions on relationships, life, project ideas I ever got get answered. I know what the right decisions are. All health benefits set aside, I feel like running helps by brain think more clearly and is the source for a great deal of my ideas -some of them stupid of course.
10. Get out of my comfort zone.
Whenever given an option – PS: life is a list of options one after another.
Last but not least, this might be the most important of all my resolutions. Like many of the previous points., this is more of a “state of mind” that should be applied as often as possible rather than a one time thing. The beauty about going outside of our comfort zone, is that if we do it for long enough, we can look back and contemplate our work. Because the fun part isn’t to get out of it -this sucks for everyone. It is to see it grow. Any of us in our daily life we can thrive to pursue this. To this day, I haven’t talked to a single person who explored discomfort and regretted it – the opposite does not apply….
I will definitely have to take some time to take a look a my life, my motivations, my goals… Basically make some new resolutions. Might be next week.
Cheers,
